Situated on a lot of previously untouched land outside Richmond, Virginia, this school provides a unique opportunity to learn through both the natural and built environment. The sloping topography and changing roof form creates opportunity for different interactions with the environment depending on a student's location and perspective. The school is constructed to maximize central green space for school-wide interaction and discovery; the design makes sure to allow for immersive interaction with the outside even from directly inside the classroom. The design also pays attention to the neighboring buildings and the rich knowledge that can be gained by interacting with the natural environment in a (sub)urban setting.
