Inspired by European thrones, this chair makes the common folk feel more assertive and authoritative through tall armrests, a wide seat, and a seat raised so the user's feet only just touch the ground.
This fully functional chair was created only with planar surfaces, cut out of a single sheet of plywood with a CNC machine. Though made from planar parts, the seat is curved to comfortable fit the average sized adult (or two small children). Supporting over 200 pounds, this chair is assembled via mortise and tenon joints – no glue! The joints holding the chair together are placed to minimize the amount of wood used and to optimize maximum weight capacity.
Side projects throughout the duration of the chair design included the modeling, rendering, and 3D resin printing of Ray & Charles Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair.
